If you've ever visited Colonial WILLIAMSBURG , outdoor gas lights are so pervasively used that you'll think they are a colonial era invention. Not so; gas lights weren't actually put into use until the early 1800's in a very few cities. But what DID happen is, as America's centennial celebration came and went, interest in a colonial decorating style was born, known as the Colonial Revival movement that lasted into the 1920's. While many cities had just transitioned from gas lighting the indoors and the outdoors with electricity, harsh electric lighting detracted from the appeal of historic homes and buildings. While homes, businesses and museums in historic areas would like to be authentic, street lights just weren't being used in the actual Colonial era because they just hadn't been invented yet. So the Colonial Williamsburg foundation, as well as many other historic attractions, have compromised by adding gas lights.

This outdoor gas lamp is named named the WILLIAMSBURG, paying homage to an old city who later solved its lighting dilemma by bringing the warmth and vibrance of a fire to their exterior spaces, inspiring you to enjoy their solution at your house. An outdoor gas lamp is a warm welcome home at your porch or driveway, or added to your deck or patio. Features 2 lighting options and 2 mounting styles to provide an inviting glow to your home's exterior entry and gathering spaces. Exterior gas lights a great means of providing security for any home or business, too, as well as for outdoor areas like parks, golf clubs and other outdoor entertainment venue. And of course, a gas light works when the power is off.

The most common style gas lamp you may be familiar with uses a mantle, starting life as a fabric mesh bag that's impregnated with metal nitrates; these metal oxides produce a warm but bright glow on the visible light spectrum while emitting little radiation (or heat). The mantle is lit when installed and the gas light is intended to burn continuously because the mantle is too fragile to touch after its initial firing. Scroll down to watch a video showing the mantles being lit.

The  gas lamp is also available with a dual inverted style or an open flame design, as shown left.

GAS USAGE
Again, the dual inverted or the upright burner must remain lit at all times because the mantel is too delicate to withstand being re-lit. On natural gas they consume 2500 btu's per hour (2000 btu on LP gas). The open flame model includes a push button electronic ignition that's mounted on the pole.  The open flame burner is a more dynamic flame vs the glow produced by the mantle lamp burner.

The lamp and post are made of rugged aluminum and painted black. WARRANTY is 30 days on paint and glass, 1 year warranty on the lamp and gas components.

INSTALLATION OPTIONS - CHOOSE POST STYLE
CHOOSE FROM in-ground mounting or patio mount (which includes a round base). The in-ground post is 3" diameter x 7'9" tall while the patio mount is 3" x 6'5" including the round base. If you order the open flame light then it will come with an electronic ignition mounted on the post as shown right, while lamps with mantles are lit manually and won't have the ignition box.
