Ground cherries are mainly grown as a novelty for the garden, though they certainly are edible. They resemble a cherry tomato that's been wrapped in its own husk, but has a tinge of something like a citrus fruit taste blended in. This variety - Aunt Mary's - is with us today because the seed was saved and grown by family members. While not a tomato, they do grow like one so plant them in full sun, 3' apart, and plant seedling deep. These guys will fool you, because the fruit falls off the plant about a week before it's ready to eat. Simply collect them and set them aside until the color becomes a deep gold. Peel away the husk and enjoy! You can eat them like cherries (or tomatoes), but they can also be used in salsa or jellies.
