Fireplace benches date back 300 years in England to the days when the fireplace provided the only source of heat and provided seating at the warmest spot in the room. The ability to sit by the fire while tending it also added to the appeal of a bench by the fire. The fireplace bench was made of iron by the local blacksmith; it was quite heavy and sized to each particular fireplace where it's designed to sit on or just outside of the fireplace hearth. The design and building made mass production of the fireplace bench impractical while making each a distinctive work of art.
